  • How to choose the right French style bed for you

When it comes to French style beds, choosing the right one for you and your sleep space can be tricky. There are many different designs to choose from - all of which exude French style and flair.

To help you suss out which type of French bed would best suit you and your home, keep reading.

Create an authentic vibe with a rattan

If you’re keen to give your boudoir a totally authentic French vibe, perhaps a rattan style bed is the best match for you. This type of bed boasts a large, curved headboard and footboard, as well as beautifully carved sides, allowing you to make a true style statement in this room. Look out for designs with intricate detailing at the tip of the headboard and legs for a little extra ooh la la.

Usually, rattan beds are made from strong, sturdy materials, such as solid oak or oak veneer, complete with a soft sheen lacquer finish. Aside from rustic wood shades, we offer rattan frames that have been painted in hues like pure white and soft ivory - the ideal colour choices if you’re looking to give your bedroom a fresh, clean look and feel.

Keep it classy with an upholstered design

For a French style bed with class, why not go for an upholstered design? This style of frame often features a soft, padded headboard which has been covered in luxurious fabric. In most cases, the fabric will look ‘buttoned’, giving the bed a stylish and sophisticated appearance. At Crown French Furniture, we also offer frames which have been designed with both an upholstered headboard and footboard section - the perfect choice if you want to transform your bedroom into a boudoir.

Aside from the upholstered element, this style of bed usually features a wealth of other stunning features. You can take your pick from designs with sloping headboards, as well as models with beautifully curved legs and sides.

Make a statement with a carved antique model

To create a charming, classically French bedroom design, a carved antique model is your best bet. With elegant carved detailing on the headboard, sides and footboard, this style of bed frame is traditionally French in appearance.

So that you can get your decor spot on, look out for designs that have been painted white and have been gently aged to give the frame a slightly distressed look and feel. To complete the room, you can pair the bed with other Provencal style pieces, such as an antique themed wardrobe or bedside cabinet.

Combine old and new with a venetian bed frame

If you like the rustic flair of French decor but you’re keen to keep your sleep space looking cool and contemporary, a venetian bed frame could be ideal. The shape of this bed provides a vintage look and feel, while its high mirrored headboard and low footboard exclude modernity, giving you the best of both worlds when it comes to combining old and new.

The mirrored effect of this style of bed frame can help uplift darker rooms, while adding an element of elegance and sophistication. Venetian style beds are perfect when matched with similar furnishings, such as a mirrored bedside table, chest of drawers or dresser.

  • Trends: 2017 Furniture

2016 has been an exciting year with the flowing demand for more edgy, contemporary pieces such as traditional pieces with a silver leaf finish. Moving past this however, we welcome what 2017 promises to bring with it!

contemporary furniture A little flash from the past ... year.

    Timeless!

Some pieces carry their hype throughout years of holding the flag, one such is our Sophia button upholstered bed which has been revered across our projects and it will continue to be "in" this year. After the interest in more flashy and opulent furnishings, white painted and neutral wooden pieces are to make a grander appearance this year as a ripple effect.

painted wood furniture Our exclusive and universally loved Sophia bed.

    Up and Coming!

Taking into account the wide variety of interests sparking throughout interior design, we can see that drama and deep character are the reigning qualities to be watched. In response to this, furnishings will take a less eye catching roll and will be intended to compliment vivid wallpapers and paints or complex combinations of accessories. Shabby chic easily clashes with sleek aesthetics whereas more simple designs offer a beautiful appearance to add to the overall effect. It's no longer about the feature wall but an exquisite blend of all ingredients within the room and this can be easily ruined by overdoing a single aspect.

subtle furniture Subtle uses of furnishings as seen in Sheerluxe's blog, linked below.

This brings rise to a variety of pastels and neutrals present in a specifically good partner for 2017, upholstery. It maintains an atmosphere of luxury whilst offering an accent rather than overpowering. The same can be said for wooden pieces which can be finished in more subtle paints, also offering a range of choices, painted French style furnishings can mesh perfectly with any interior and are timeless!

french furniture Our Beaulieu range blends subtle painted pieces with beautifully upholstered works.

    A Blast From the Past!

Shabby chic still finds a place within the mix however, much of the furniture that offers a rustic appeal and perhaps a grander impression also allow for niche colours to be settled into a room. pistachios and a family of darker colours can be brought to life by cooler tones from our Etienne range or dark woods such as mahogany.

distressed furniture A shabby chic way of introducing cooler tones to compliment room dynamics.

  • New Year New Me

Starting the year of with a bang can be difficult, with the remains of 2016 lying around and the Christmas decorations reminding you that we’re back to normal life … It can be hard to move past the festive period. Maybe this is why we all relish the idea of new year’s resolutions, it gives us the chance to move on to something better and hopefully 2017 will be spectacular!

    Fireworks

One of the best ways to celebrate is by lighting up the sky with flamboyant colours and loud noise, our interiors should mirror this extravagant display with new looks and daring combinations!

    Resolutions

This time of year, we reflect and begin to acknowledge our flaws (oh so many flaws) but most importantly we imagine our change, our reward for good behaviour. What are we aiming for this year? Diets, finances, seeing old friends? Whatever you have in mind, we wish you the best of luck and hope 2017 brings happy days.

  • Carving Pumpkins

The Halloween spirit is something we all have, although some people wish to deny it, your inner child will always tug on your heart strings a little around this time of year. Even though the days have past for dressing up and pretending to be Mr T or Velma, we can still get creative in a more adult friendly way.

    Playing Dress-up

Halloween becomes so much more exciting when we are able to flex our creative muscles so why not carry on this tradition into adulthood? Let’s take to our homes and create a festive interior that sparkles that hint of shock that we all crave this time of year. Spice it up with a wider use of mirrors, easy to decorate into a Halloween must have, they also act as such an elegant piece for the rest of the year. Our royal silver leaf mirror has a beautifully Gothic theme when paired with darker items and appropriate decorations yet is absolutely regal when left on its own or accompanied with pure accessories, ideally all white.

For those of you that plan to ignore the Halloween period we have something to offer you too! For some this season is as exciting as a non-leap-year February, and who can blame them! Halloween is, in its essence, a very niche holiday and it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. In this case, we have something that may grab your attention and make this October a more memorable one.

  • The Shabby Chic Round Off

Our homes are all different, and they are all our very own space to flex our creative muscles and show off our personality. Some stick to the tried and tested soft neutral colour schemes that hold everything together with ease and familiarity whilst others stray from the beaten path and can boast something new and more complex in their interiors.

shabby chic A shabby chic setting

One of our absolute favourite interior themes, one which is far from boring, is shabby chic; we choose to keep a lot of shabby chic furniture around our catalogue and throughout our ranges to inspire people to try these individual pieces that show a true character.

A little vintage, a little indie

The shabby chic style is all about the aged look; it adds … oomph! Something has to be beautifully charismatic to be considered shabby chic. it’s all about focusing on the character of the piece but this can be hard to complete a room with as you often end up with a miss-matching madness.

It all comes down to the accessories!

This is our staple advice, fix up your accessories!! There is nothing you cannot blend or mesh or ease into your interior dynamic with the right accessories. Shabby chic designs need a precise and clinical use of accessories so as to create a beautiful interior with a fluid feel to it whilst still maintaining the natural and carefree essence that makes it so vintage.

    shabby-chic-2

The accessories are truly the stars when it comes to a shabby chic image, as the furniture, although exquisite and a show stopper in its own sense, is merely the canvas you use to throw your personality onto. Besides, it just wouldn’t work without them.

Check out our homely signs with their friendly essence, bringing a relaxed casual feel you need to create an aged look. From the home of shabby chic accessories, Gisela Graham, they have exactly what we look for in a glue for your bigger pieces.

It can become an extremely attractive force when you find the right colour combinations for your interior, but we encourage you to throw some cold water on yourself and resist! The shabby chic look is perfect when you have a little bit of asymmetry and imperfection, sticking to painted woods, as these are rustic, but varying the colour or texture of the accessories can boost your individuality.

There’s a lot to say about shabby chic style, and we truly want to be your guide through it all, but as for now we will have to leave you with a few simple words on the accessory side of things. Believe us, we have much more to say! I suppose you have to take a lot of care to establish a casual look …

  • Upcycling!

Upcycling is a way of repurposing old furniture in order to give it a second life and possibly even a new purpose. Upcycling comes with many benefits including, saving money, creating a sense of achievement and reducing your footprint through using less raw materials when old ones can be rejuvenated.

Repurposing your old furniture can be easy, especially if the piece is finished in a raw wood. Never the less it is still simple even if the piece is painted. To reproduce a fantastic shabby chic painted item, simply follow these 5 steps:

    1. Sand the furniture to reduce the risk of varnish protecting the product from the new paint.
    2. Using a Satin paint for a matt finish, paint the furniture with a brush or a small roller for a hand painted appeal.
    3. Wait for the paint to dry completely before adding a second coat if needed until the furniture is the required colour.
    4. You can then add a shabby chic, distressed finish by gently sanding parts of the furniture that would typically be worn by wear-&-tear.
    5. Finish the piece with a varnish to protect the paint from chips.
