French Style and Upholstered Beds

In 18th century France, a bed was the statement piece of the bedroom. Decadence was practically a requirement and it was the best place to demonstrate luxury and wealth.

A French bed frame would have been adorned with intricate carvings of wreaths or laurel leaves, a Neoclassical trend that stemmed from a fascination of Greece and Rome. Attention to detail was paramount so the furniture was expected to be as decadent and extravagant as could be afforded. A touch of royalty was present through the inclusion of bed crowns which added height and flanked the bed in luxurious fabrics.

French beds still maintain a certain je nes sais quois with their beautiful decoration and plush button upholstery. Their attention to detail remains even in the most contemporary styles.

At Crown French Furniture, we offer a sumptuous range of upholstered beds, wooden designs, rattan models, ornate gold beds and more depending on your personal taste. From the simple, beautifully curved Camille French Style Upholstered Bed to the more palatial Versailles Gilt Curved French High End Bed, we’re positive that you’ll be able to find your dream luxury bed when you shop our range.

Many of our designs incorporate the classic scroll leg, a feature from the Rococo style that was fashionable from around 1730 to 1770. This design style was about asymmetry, curved lines and the introduction of stones and seashells that were often found carved into French bed frames and chair arms. Symmetry was not a necessity so you might find that the opulent carved wood doesn’t match the other side. Our beds that are constructed from luxury woods have been patiently hand carved to reflect the details that were present in classical French furniture.

A statement headboard is the finishing touch to your French bed frame. Our bold Cristal French Silver Leaf Button Bed exudes sophistication and opulence. The button upholstery is a classic style from France, but the stunning velvet in a jewel purple adds so much luxury and modernity.

How to Dress a Bed

A beautiful bed deserves some beautiful bedding to accompany it. However, you don’t want to detract from the gilded details. Your bedding should complement the bed and bring out its most delicate features rather than hide them.

A simple bed could carry a coloured or pattern bedspread, however if the design is quite intricate, a set of crisp, white bedding will match beautifully. You can introduce different textures through a faux fur throw and a set of decorative cushions.

Pastels were a popular colour scheme in 18th century France, favoured by Marie Antoinette. If you want to stick to this French décor theme, consider using soft duck eggs, mint greens or dusky pinks. These colours are extremely versatile and would work well with most bed colours, styles and materials.

Our French style beds can be safely delivered straight to your home via our own in house delivery team. For a small additional fee, you can select our ‘white glove’ service and we’ll assemble your new bed for you so it’s ready to be slept in that night.
