  • How to Choose a Nightstand

Nightstands, or bedside tables as they are commonly known, are an essential part of bedroom furniture. From providing the perfect place for lamps that can affect the ambience of your entire room to offering additional storage space and the perfect location for your alarm clock and personal belongings, these multifunctional items of furniture can serve a range of important purposes. That’s why choosing the correct nightstands for your bedroom is so important.

When selecting the ideal bedside table(s) for your bedroom, there are a number of things you must consider. These include; the size and height of the item of furniture and whether or not it will fit in the space designated for it, the potential storage space it could offer, the materials it is made from, and, of course, the colour, design and overall style of the item.

From how to correctly measure a nightstand to knowing how to find a bedside table that is the correct height for your bed, this handy guide will tell you everything you need to know when it comes to purchasing the perfect nightstand for your bedroom.

    What is a nightstand?

A nightstand is a small table or chest that is meant to be placed next to a bed - hence its alternative name, bedside table. Depending on design, nightstands can be simplistic tables that provide nothing more than an extra surface to hold a lamp, alarm clock and any personal items you want to keep close to you while you’re in bed, or they can involve more complex designs than incorporate drawers and shelves, offering you additional storage space in your bedroom.

What is a nightstand used for?

Simply put, they provide an extra surface to support any items you would like to keep close at hand when you’re in bed. From lamps, books, drinks, remote controls and alarm clocks to medications, mobile phones and even intercoms linked to other areas of your home, nightstands provide an incredibly useful place to keep items that you may want easy access to when in bed.

    How to measure a nightstand

If you're looking to buy a new nightstand, it's important that you make sure it's the right size and fit for your space and your needs. After all, if your table is too tall, you will find yourself having to reach upwards to retrieve anything from it when in bed, while a nightstand that is too short may affect the lighting in your bedroom when paired with your existing bedside lamps. For these reasons, one of the most important steps when choosing the right nightstand for your bedroom is finding one that works practically with other items of furniture such as your bed and is the correct size to best fill the space you have available to you.

Before purchasing a new nightstand, you should first measure the space in your bedroom where you intend to put it using a tape measure. Measure both the width and length of the space, as well as the height of your bed. Once you have noted down all of these measurements, remember to add at least two or three inches to the width and length to allow for a reasonable gap between the bed and the nightstand, as well as space behind for any plugs or chargers. This extra ‘breathing room’ will also ensure you will be able to easily move around your chosen table and access any inbuilt drawers/shelves with ease.

When it comes to measuring the nightstand itself, the first thing you need to do is ensure its dimensions fit comfortably  within the measurements of the space it is intended to fill. As well as making sure the bedside table is not too large, it is also worth remembering that if the item is more than six or seven inches smaller than its intended space, it might be dwarfed by empty space on both sides - it’s all about finding a nightstand that is both not too small or too large.

How to pair nightstands with your bed

Once you have identified a bedside table of suitable width and length, next you have to make sure it is the correct height - this will ensure it pairs correctly with your bed. As a rule, to ensure you can easily reach items on your nightstand while lying down, its surface should be no more than three inches higher or lower than the top of your mattress. Whether you opt for a table that is slightly taller or shorter than the height of your mattress comes down to personal preference.

Do nightstands have to match your dresser?

To put it simply, not necessarily! When it comes to the interior design and decor of your home, there are no concrete rules. Deciding whether or not you would like your nightstands to match the dresser in your bedroom, for example, simply comes down to personal preference and the overall aesthetic you are trying to achieve. If, for example, you have a traditional country style bedroom, sticking to a theme and choosing nightstands that match other furniture in your room may help complete the look you are going for. On the other hand, if you want an industrial look, or simply an eclectic mismatched vintage style, choosing items that deliberately don’t match may be the way to go.

The only commonly accepted rule of thumb in this area of interior design is to at least have two items in a room that have something in common. This could be the type of wood they are made from, the same design style, the same colour, or even an exact match. The rest is up to you!

  • Why We Love: The Gilt French Curved Bed

The flood of orders for Gold beds has inspired us. We currently have a tremendous amount of happy customers looking at their Rococo Antique Gold beds (and a fair few waiting to join them!). But for those who haven't found love with the heavy floral carvings, this blog is about our upholstered hero.

    Button upholstered, gilt vibes

Our Gilt French curved bed brings the same elegance of antique gold as our rococo but with a more homely feel. Whilst the rococo shows of regality, the gilt French brings a more contemporary style. The floral carvings are more subtle and serve to compliment the button upholstery beautifully. This makes the star of the show the contrast between the finish and the fabric.

    gold gilt french upholstered bed

The button upholstery on our Gilt bed looks so inviting

Whilst the antique gold adds light and brightness to the piece, the softness of our linens finishes the overall look of class with a sense of comfort. We see the bed as a more homely approach to the antique gold style. This is because it incorporates parts of French design in a loving, warm way.

    How to style it

Pair this bed with the rest of our Gilt and Gold Leaf range or use strong colours to bring out the opulence. This range thrives with contrast elsewhere in the room so be brave and make the most of those eye catching designs.

Pair it with some lush rug to really boost that cozy and classy appeal. Alternatively, bring some neutrals in and let the French style be the star of the show.

    Fleur

For anyone who sees all this gold and feels overpowered, our Fleur range is for you. We take the carvings and style of our gold range but tone it down with a more palatable silver leaf.

    Fleur silver french bed

This finish is less powerful and allows more flexibility. Style this range with the same brave colours our gold pieces thrive with for the perfect bedroom.

  • How to choose the right French style bed for you

When it comes to French style beds, choosing the right one for you and your sleep space can be tricky. There are many different designs to choose from - all of which exude French style and flair.

To help you suss out which type of French bed would best suit you and your home, keep reading.

Create an authentic vibe with a rattan

If you’re keen to give your boudoir a totally authentic French vibe, perhaps a rattan style bed is the best match for you. This type of bed boasts a large, curved headboard and footboard, as well as beautifully carved sides, allowing you to make a true style statement in this room. Look out for designs with intricate detailing at the tip of the headboard and legs for a little extra ooh la la.

Usually, rattan beds are made from strong, sturdy materials, such as solid oak or oak veneer, complete with a soft sheen lacquer finish. Aside from rustic wood shades, we offer rattan frames that have been painted in hues like pure white and soft ivory - the ideal colour choices if you’re looking to give your bedroom a fresh, clean look and feel.

Keep it classy with an upholstered design

For a French style bed with class, why not go for an upholstered design? This style of frame often features a soft, padded headboard which has been covered in luxurious fabric. In most cases, the fabric will look ‘buttoned’, giving the bed a stylish and sophisticated appearance. At Crown French Furniture, we also offer frames which have been designed with both an upholstered headboard and footboard section - the perfect choice if you want to transform your bedroom into a boudoir.

Aside from the upholstered element, this style of bed usually features a wealth of other stunning features. You can take your pick from designs with sloping headboards, as well as models with beautifully curved legs and sides.

Make a statement with a carved antique model

To create a charming, classically French bedroom design, a carved antique model is your best bet. With elegant carved detailing on the headboard, sides and footboard, this style of bed frame is traditionally French in appearance.

So that you can get your decor spot on, look out for designs that have been painted white and have been gently aged to give the frame a slightly distressed look and feel. To complete the room, you can pair the bed with other Provencal style pieces, such as an antique themed wardrobe or bedside cabinet.

Combine old and new with a venetian bed frame

If you like the rustic flair of French decor but you’re keen to keep your sleep space looking cool and contemporary, a venetian bed frame could be ideal. The shape of this bed provides a vintage look and feel, while its high mirrored headboard and low footboard exclude modernity, giving you the best of both worlds when it comes to combining old and new.

The mirrored effect of this style of bed frame can help uplift darker rooms, while adding an element of elegance and sophistication. Venetian style beds are perfect when matched with similar furnishings, such as a mirrored bedside table, chest of drawers or dresser.

  • Louis Phillipe and reclaimed wood

Our extensive catalogue is ever progressing and recently we have explored the classical French design of Sleighs. The Greek encouraged this movement in 19th century French design, leading to these scroll-like curves featuring beautifully in French furniture. We have been fans of this design for some time, as shown by our Antionette range and the outstanding craftsmanship that goes into those pieces. These boast a mahogany build and so have a very strong presence, this makes them outstanding feature pieces and collectively they create an unbelievable bedroom aesthetic.

see how the sleigh style becomes an eye-catching feature to a neutral bedroom see how the sleigh style becomes an eye-catching feature to a neutral bedroom

Similar to the Antionette range, here, the sleek understated style of the sleigh is very minimalist and allows the quality of the wood to shine through perfectly. In contrast to our Antionette range, the Louis Phillipe pieces are crafted in reclaimed wood with a much different presence than the powerful mahogany above. We wanted to add depth and bring this luxurious aesthetic into a more homely and warm light and this range does so exquisitely. The charming imperfections of the wood give it an amazing natural appeal and allows it to blend with other wood pieces splendidly.

in reclaimed wood, the sleigh style becomes so homely and welcoming in reclaimed wood, the sleigh style becomes so homely and welcoming

As you can see, although both ranges draw similar inspiration they are stark contrasts to one another in terms of interior designs. Thus, we now offer the sleigh style in a soulful and sombre range as well as an extraordinarily bold and beautiful collection.

We're very excited to see what our customers do with these pieces, we hope to see lots of farmhouse interiors and rustic style.

  • Luxury!

The main focus on furniture is the balance between beauty,  practicality and comfort . That is what French furniture can achieve and that is how you create the luxury feeling.  There are no limits on what furniture you have, it's literally all down to personal preference. This is why i love french furniture because of the different styles and how unique the designs are!

    Rattan_French_Beds1

Some of the best and most luxurious  hotels in the world go for a traditional french design, because of their gorgeous carvings and beautiful antique finishes! Additionally, the quality is just tremendous with a huge variety of french style furniture and designs for everyone.

Some might say, hand carved to perfection... French furniture gives you the feeling of luxury and comfort all in one go. Each piece and collection is unique with different carved designs, finishes and details.  This is becoming more popular over the years and can help to produce different atmospheres within your interior.

  • A spring to remember

Spring is just around the corner already, 2018 has started so quick and hopefully everyone is sticking to their new year’s resolutions! Spring is perfect for creation and new designs because the sun light will help highlight any features you want to pop in your interior. Whether that be accessories placed to catch the light or to capture a colour scheme you want to come through.

    sun rise

To really catch colours in the light this spring is more bright and floral, it jumps out at you and brightens up the whole interior for a tranquil setting. This is a very colourful season and often is the most creative, it could even set your interior design up for summer!

    download (5)

A hot trend in spring is more of an indigo blue or more of a refined coastal look, but this colour could possibly be overwhelming or too much for a whole room decoration for a number of people. But maybe simple accessories such as vases and flowers in this colour could even liven up the room.

    Indigo 500 x 500

A gorgeous addition to the dining room is the Pembroke dining table for an “aura of sophistication.” Magnificent for a spring collection with a warm oak colour that really helps capture the light.

pembroke_french_painted_dining_tableWe offer a lot of ranges and collections of furniture which all have spectacular designs and are excellent quality. But one range stands out amongst all which is the Camille. Produced from Oak veneers with a traditional and French design but can still go beautifully with a modern interior. Perfect for this spring, the Camille is an alternative to having bright and floral colours, giving a more peaceful setting whilst still capturing the light. A design like this can still make your interior pop in spring and can carry its charm over to summer as well.

Make this a spring to remember.

  • Divine design

Produce a powerful and stunning presence in the room with the Portofino collection, it has the classical design implemented into it and is crafted so perfectly. The craftsman really needs a round of applause for this divine design, and its gorgeous light grey stone finish that is distressed with subtle and intricate carvings. The seven drawer Portofino chest is an excellent addition to the bedroom and really creates a laid back and chilled vibe around the room. It is amazing to light up a room and has plenty of storage capacity for anyone to use!

cff2443_portofino_light_grey_7_drawer_french_chestThe Camille collection is a classical inspired and traditional design, honestly this is personally one of my favourite designs with its weathered oak finish that creates a beautiful setting. The finish creates a rustic rich tone which has a romantic vibe and is the perfect finishing touch to any room. A perfect example of this is the ravishing Camille French style upholstered bed with simple curves covered in a natural fabric and made from solid oak wood! Truly majestic…

  • The Beauty in the Wood

A rich textured grain is a beautiful thing and can be used exquisitely to bring a natural and fresh look to your interior, however, used wrongly it can provide a clash of tones and a mess of confusing aesthetics.

So keep a keen eye out when selecting wooden pieces as it is vital to blend the materials together seamlessly!

    Zero Diversity

In the realm of wooden interiors or those furnished as such, you can never go wrong with a staple wood. One consistently used timber that provides the textured grainy look without needing another to contrast, favoured examples of these are oak, for its lighter tones, and mahogany, tried and tested, a true classic.

Antoinette Range, Mahogany Wood Antoinette Range, Mahogany

Solid oak furniture has seen a rise in recent years, with large scale shops specialising in the wood, and it’s no surprise as it offers a familiar light colour with wood knots to give it a more natural look. It is a front runner as it is not overpowering and pieces can be solely constructed from the wood and still look sleek and sophisticated, it also goes exceedingly well with silver, steel or chrome metals which fashion superb handles in our Tuscany range!

Tuscany Range, Oak Wood Tuscany Range, Oak

As a contrast is the stand alone, unmistakable appearance of mahogany, the wood that has been used across every range and every style, and for good reason! It is a strong and incredibly durable timber which is a priceless asset when choosing pieces that you hope to maintain for years to come. From all mahogany dark toned furnishings that exude a powerful masculine presence to the white painted, hand carved pieces it is a truly extraordinary wood with a beautiful grain and texture, one which we love to work with and chose for our Chateau range.

    Mixing the Grain

A delicate procedure if there ever was one in the realm of interior design, mixing different flavours of wood and creating a multi-tonal masterpiece within your living space’s harmony can be catastrophic if done carelessly.

Mitz Takahashi, oak and mahogany wood Mitz Takahashi's Oak and Mahogany Wood Sideboard

So your aim is to create harmony between contrasting pieces, it can be beautiful, it can be a show stopping display of your interior expertise and so we do not want to discourage it. Here goes.

Our advice on blending different woods in one room!

    1. Keep it fun, there’s no point in adding a splash of fair if you naturally stay between the lines. This can cause a contrast of interests in your home and having one room as a sleek, by-the-book recipe interior and another as a mix of this that and everything in between is a no go!
    1. Keep it Light, different textures are good, they are celebrated in fact! We must tread carefully however and only allow so much change in one room. Otherwise we end up with items that clash harder than Crocs and a little black dress … now wouldn’t that look stupid.
    1. Keep looking! It’s hard to find what you’re looking for, especially in different ranges of wood, but persevere and you will be thankful when you find the perfect piece and so glad that you didn’t settle for that rotten thing that “almost works”.

As always, wishing you a keen eye and something to buy!
