  •  Should you put a rug under a dining room table

Rugs in dining rooms tend to divide opinion. Some people swear by a rug under their dining table, offering practical benefits as well as aesthetic, whereas other homeowners think it’s a real no-no. But which is the right option for your home?

Rugs under dining tables - the pros and cons

There are two main things to consider when deciding whether or not a dining room rug is the right choice for you - practicality and aesthetics.

On the practical side, a rug under your dining table can easily become dirty or stained, particularly if you have children. You can overcome this issue by choosing a rug in a dark colour, or one with a pattern which distracts the eye. Clean and vacuum regularly and you can keep the rug in good condition.

Some people find that a rug under the dining table makes it difficult to move their chairs in and out - when sitting down and getting up from the table. Whether this will affect you very much depends on the rug you choose, but there is another side to consider. If you’re not a fan of the scraping noise that metal or wood dining chairs can make on wood or tile floors, a rug is the ideal solution.

It can also be very pleasant to have a thick or fluffy rug under your feet while you eat. This can make the dining table more usable for a wider range of activities, from lazy Sunday breakfasts to doing homework after school, dinner parties to board game evenings.

On the aesthetic side of things, a rug can add a huge amount of visual appeal to a room. It can create a frame or a border for the dining table, making a focal point within the room and a real feature of the dining room. Rugs are so important in large or open plan spaces, as they help to ‘zone off’ different areas (such as the dining area). You can use a large area rug, along with smart lighting choices, to create a space within a space. If you have a large room and you’re worried about it feeling cavernous or confused, a beautiful area rug can work wonders.

large wooden table with two statement lights above it and a black rug underneath it.

How to choose a dining room rug

If you’re ready to take the plunge and pick out a beautiful new rug for your dining table, bear the following in mind:

    • Go larger than you think you need. When it comes to area rugs, bigger is usually better. A rug that exactly fits or is only just larger than an area rug can look a little odd, as the proportions will be out of balance. However, a generous rug that extends quite a way from the table looks luxurious and creates a dedicated dining space. It’s also practical, as it gives extra space for dining chairs to be pulled out (without the legs bumping onto the hard floor).

    • Durability is key. The rug under your dining table will have to put up with a lot of use, so it needs to be up to the job. Chair legs will be constantly scraped back and forward, and the table legs themselves may start to leave dents in the floor - many fragile or very expensive rugs may not be able to withstand this kind of use. You might want to look at rugs that have been specially made for patios or outdoor areas, or at least ones that aren’t too delicate or at risk from fraying or damage.

    • Choose a camouflaging pattern. You don’t want to be terrified of spills and stains on your pristine cream rug every time friends or family come over, so it’s best to choose a dark coloured patterned rug. This will camouflage any stains and spills nicely.

How to measure a rug for a dining room table

If you have your heart set on an area rug, it’s time to start measuring. It’s always a good idea to measure up before buying a rug, just so you can double-check that it fits properly and the finished look is what you imagined. As above, be generous with the amount of space you leave around your dining table. If you haven’t yet bought either dining table or rug, you could find that it helps to measure the room first, and then factor in the size of rug and table you have in mind.

If you’re having trouble picturing what your new rug will look like, why not mark it out on the floor? Use something temporary like chalk or tape, and mark the outlines of your rug with the dining table in the middle. You can move and adjust as you like, noting down measurements for a custom rug or double-checking that a rug you like will be perfect for the space.

  • What am I supposed to do now?

The Love Island Villa has closed its doors and I am left with a void only the phrase ‘I’ve got a text’ will fill.

If you’re like me you’re probably asking the question how did Tommy and Molly-Mae not win!! But also and most importantly  ‘how on earth will I survive?’ Binge watch the previous series on Netflix? Install an app on your phone to count down the days until Love Island 2020? Oh what the hell I’m doing both!

For me Love Island was my guilty pleasure. I personally have no television in my bedroom, a conscious decision I made when I redecorated. I mean televisions are ugly right…? Certainly not in keeping with my beautiful Provencale Carved Bed. But for 8 weeks solid I have resorted to jumping into bed, surrounding myself with masses of cushions, wedging my tablet into the perfect position and Voila! A tech free zone no more!

But as I mourn the loss of my Love Island fix, my bedroom will once again return to a sanctuary, a space to shut off from the world and relax in. On the plus side I can use all that spare time to find the perfect chandelier to hang gracefully above ones bed! Oh my husband will be pleased!

What do you love most about your bedroom, and what do you wish you could add or change? Do you have a television or any tricks to conceal one? Or do you agree that a bedroom should be free from all things digital.  I’ll go for the latter…until next year of course!

  • How to choose the right French style bed for you

When it comes to French style beds, choosing the right one for you and your sleep space can be tricky. There are many different designs to choose from - all of which exude French style and flair.

To help you suss out which type of French bed would best suit you and your home, keep reading.

Create an authentic vibe with a rattan

If you’re keen to give your boudoir a totally authentic French vibe, perhaps a rattan style bed is the best match for you. This type of bed boasts a large, curved headboard and footboard, as well as beautifully carved sides, allowing you to make a true style statement in this room. Look out for designs with intricate detailing at the tip of the headboard and legs for a little extra ooh la la.

Usually, rattan beds are made from strong, sturdy materials, such as solid oak or oak veneer, complete with a soft sheen lacquer finish. Aside from rustic wood shades, we offer rattan frames that have been painted in hues like pure white and soft ivory - the ideal colour choices if you’re looking to give your bedroom a fresh, clean look and feel.

Keep it classy with an upholstered design

For a French style bed with class, why not go for an upholstered design? This style of frame often features a soft, padded headboard which has been covered in luxurious fabric. In most cases, the fabric will look ‘buttoned’, giving the bed a stylish and sophisticated appearance. At Crown French Furniture, we also offer frames which have been designed with both an upholstered headboard and footboard section - the perfect choice if you want to transform your bedroom into a boudoir.

Aside from the upholstered element, this style of bed usually features a wealth of other stunning features. You can take your pick from designs with sloping headboards, as well as models with beautifully curved legs and sides.

Make a statement with a carved antique model

To create a charming, classically French bedroom design, a carved antique model is your best bet. With elegant carved detailing on the headboard, sides and footboard, this style of bed frame is traditionally French in appearance.

So that you can get your decor spot on, look out for designs that have been painted white and have been gently aged to give the frame a slightly distressed look and feel. To complete the room, you can pair the bed with other Provencal style pieces, such as an antique themed wardrobe or bedside cabinet.

Combine old and new with a venetian bed frame

If you like the rustic flair of French decor but you’re keen to keep your sleep space looking cool and contemporary, a venetian bed frame could be ideal. The shape of this bed provides a vintage look and feel, while its high mirrored headboard and low footboard exclude modernity, giving you the best of both worlds when it comes to combining old and new.

The mirrored effect of this style of bed frame can help uplift darker rooms, while adding an element of elegance and sophistication. Venetian style beds are perfect when matched with similar furnishings, such as a mirrored bedside table, chest of drawers or dresser.

  • The Colour Purple

This isn't the English variant of Alice Walker's 'The Color Purple' but an introduction to the vibrant and eye-catching colours of 2019 (a wildly less serious topic)! The style over last year has drifted to more standout colours and creating seamless  matches instead of different shades of grey.

Still worth a mention as it is an incredible read!

The crunch of leaves beneath your feet

Hot colours to look for are currently autumnal, burnt oranges, light browns and burgundy. These can make beautiful feature colours but also have a safe feel as they are quite mellow and easy to look at. A typical example is the flood of tan overcoats you see on your smartly dressed colleagues.

The colours represent natural bright environments

Translating this onto the interior design scene, we hope over 2019 to see more feature walls and smartly patterned throw cushions. Be braver with your colour choices but, as always, try to keep it palatable. Our general rule of thumb is no more than three colours in one room (with a bit of slack for white, black and grey as a fourth) and no more than 3 patterns. Patterns are hard as some can sit nicely together whereas some can completely disagree, use your judgement and style to make your pick.

    Living Coral

Starting 2019 you may also see the label 'living coral' thrown around a lot. This is because Pantone named it colour of the year and if you get chance, you should check out their post about it. It shows how well this colour can be used by expressing it through the page, fonts and imagery. There is an especially beautiful video showing its natural presence under the sea.

2019 colour of the year The colour really does shine alongside pale blues

The vibe is not too dissimilar to the flush of autumnal colours also rearing their heads. Both exhibit a relaxing undertone, not too aggressive in appearance. This however has a more floral, tropical atmosphere than the warming, spicy flavours of the oranges. I would encourage experimenting with this pallet to see what makes it shine. I would warn that pastels fall in and out of fashion whereas seasonal colours remain timeless.

amazing use of colour Perfect example of the colour scheme, featured in Livinator

    Furniture to finish the look

Use this modern colour inspiration to enhance your existing decor. As always with warm colours, a farmhouse or natural wood aesthetic makes a lovely homely environment. We would love to see someone take our Cheltenham range and use this scheme to add depth.

somebody please dress this in fluffy bedding

As a newly featured range in our catalogue we are interested to see what our stylish customers can achieve with this versatile look, especially playing with the painted finishes available. In our opinion it would suit Autumnal colour schemes with hints of copper around the room.

taupe finish tallboy The taupe finish is a favourite of mine

This aesthetic has been experimented with a lot recently to great success. As a more contemporary suggestion, check out some of our weathered pieces. These can add character to a more polished look, going hand in hand with the casual timeless aesthetic of dark reds, oranges etc.

  • Reflecting on the year

As we approach the new year and 2018 comes to an end, we thought we would reflect on some extremely beautiful ranges added to our website that could inspire you in 2019. To be honest this year seems to have gone fast and it feels like 2 weeks ago I was lying in the melting hot sun whilst having a cold refreshing drink. Now I’m in my 2 furry coats scrambling for warmth!

    Living room fireplace

One of our personal favourites is the Louis Philippe reclaimed furniture just because of its remarkable simplistic and elegant design with imperfections in the wood. I find it rather intriguing since it displays a natural beauty within the room, giving a sense of a traditional cosy household. Using natural wood imperfections has grew in popularity this year and became quite trendy, giving off a timeless classic French design that matches a huge amount of settings they are placed in. Ranging from modern to traditional homes.

    Louis philippe reclaimed furniture

Now if we are really reflecting on the year, then we have to add one of our gorgeous mirrors to this collection so we can really get a reflection… Yes, that was cheesy, I know! But take a look at this fabulous Chantilly dressing table mirror which can be finished in either a beautiful light grey or a luxurious white. From my personal perspective, the white is my favourite colour due to it being more eye catching and standing out in the room. It creates such a tranquil ambience! Now I’m not saying the grey is a bad colour for the mirror. This colour has its own unique qualities by tending to blend into its surroundings more and can also be a centrepiece on top of your dressing table.

    Chantilly dressing table mirror

Linking to the mirror, the whole Chantilly range is just marvellous and is finished in a sophisticated antique white or light grey colour. Perfect for most settings, it is crafted from a solid pine wood that will add an opulent touch to any room. In any season, this collection adds their own warm touch to the room and continue to stand out all year round which is why I just had to talk about this lovely design and range.

Finally, we also want to thank everyone for another amazing year! We have loved interacting with all of you whether its been through social media, reviews, customer orders or even this blog page. You have all been a huge help to us this year and we will continue to aim  to make you happy and satisfied with our services. We want to keep inspiring you and your interior designs by helping out the most we can. Our team also appreciates all the support you give us!

    Thank you

  • Luxury!

The main focus on furniture is the balance between beauty,  practicality and comfort . That is what French furniture can achieve and that is how you create the luxury feeling.  There are no limits on what furniture you have, it's literally all down to personal preference. This is why i love french furniture because of the different styles and how unique the designs are!

Some of the best and most luxurious  hotels in the world go for a traditional french design, because of their gorgeous carvings and beautiful antique finishes! Additionally, the quality is just tremendous with a huge variety of french style furniture and designs for everyone.

  • A spring to remember

Spring is just around the corner already, 2018 has started so quick and hopefully everyone is sticking to their new year’s resolutions! Spring is perfect for creation and new designs because the sun light will help highlight any features you want to pop in your interior. Whether that be accessories placed to catch the light or to capture a colour scheme you want to come through.

    sun rise

To really catch colours in the light this spring is more bright and floral, it jumps out at you and brightens up the whole interior for a tranquil setting. This is a very colourful season and often is the most creative, it could even set your interior design up for summer!

    download (5)

A hot trend in spring is more of an indigo blue or more of a refined coastal look, but this colour could possibly be overwhelming or too much for a whole room decoration for a number of people. But maybe simple accessories such as vases and flowers in this colour could even liven up the room.

    Indigo 500 x 500

A gorgeous addition to the dining room is the Pembroke dining table for an “aura of sophistication.” Magnificent for a spring collection with a warm oak colour that really helps capture the light.

pembroke_french_painted_dining_tableWe offer a lot of ranges and collections of furniture which all have spectacular designs and are excellent quality. But one range stands out amongst all which is the Camille. Produced from Oak veneers with a traditional and French design but can still go beautifully with a modern interior. Perfect for this spring, the Camille is an alternative to having bright and floral colours, giving a more peaceful setting whilst still capturing the light. A design like this can still make your interior pop in spring and can carry its charm over to summer as well.

Make this a spring to remember.

  • Winter chills

The temperature is dropping, are you staring to feel it? I’m already starting to add my fur throws on to my bed at night for that extra warmth! It’s already freezing and we all just want to be all snug in and outside our homes. As much I love summer and basking in the sun, I am actually looking forward to winter because I can start bringing out my nice silky jumpers and coats!

    Winter lake

An exquisite colour scheme for this winter is grey, it’s a magical and fabulous colour which adds extra cosy feelings to the house. This can be used for your home accessories or furniture to create a soft balance. To be honest I also love grey because it is more neutral and tranquil and it just suits winter due to the elegance of it.

    Grey interior design

A beautiful grey collection we have, is the Malvern range with very smooth carvings. However, this colour is a very light and a gentle grey but still looks absolutely fabulous. Why not have a sneak peek at our Malvern Extending Dining Table with a combination of rustic oak wood and a fabulous smooth off- grey finish.

  • Expanding and Outstanding

Recently we have been expanding our ranges and allowing more niche items to exist within our favourite collections. We have introduced single, smaller beds as well as more eccentric and decadent designs.

    Quality

Expanding our range means finding pieces and craftsmen that will be able to withhold our lofty standards for our customers. At the heart of our catalogue is the fusion of comfort with style and our recently added pieces embody this desire.

    sophia_upholstered_french_single_bed_1

Take a look at our new single bed, this is a big step for us as previously our beds have been exclusively doubles or higher sizes. Through dealing with many customers, we came to the decision that it was time we supplied people with a more flexible bed, able to fit into rooms with tight doorways into spaces that couldn’t host a larger bed.

    Variety

Obviously, a large part of furniture sales is having what people want, so we try to cover as many bases in our somewhat bigger than you would expect area of French style furniture.

a few pieces with our Parisian contemporary influence a few pieces with our Parisian contemporary influence

Take our Parisian contemporary pieces, although not a staple piece in our catalogue, it gives you a feel for the variety we try to offer to our customers. Contrast these pieces with some of our more traditional rococo or rattan items and you can see the span of our catalogue.

    Specificity

Another aspect we have been working on is our niche items, we love these as they tend to be the showstoppers. The items you’ve searched everywhere for and dropped your coffee once you’ve seen it just there amongst our website.

    They wow.
